I shoot a glance at Dominic but his face is closed, like a locked, bolted door. This just confirms it. I’m an idiot for thinking that what just happened meant anything. He couldn’t get away from me fast enough. How could I believe he was doing anything but playing the game?

I shrug, somehow managing to contort my face into a smirk. ‘It was fine,’ I say. ‘Considering we were shoved into a dark dusty hole-in-the-wall and ordered to stick our tongues down each other’s throats.’

‘Ugh,’ Camilla sneers. ‘How coarse. Well, like I always say, you can’t create chemistry if there isn’t any, and you two were obviously the wrong match. Come on Dommy, it’s time for the dance party. We’ve already started next door.’

I watch as Dominic lets Camilla take his hand and lead him away. I don’t trust myself to speak. Tears threaten my eyes, whether of rage or hurt I can’t tell. This is ridiculous, I tell myself. It wasn’t that long ago that I hated Dominic Dumont. I should get a grip. Dominic’s a boy. Boys are opportunists. What else is he going to do when he’s trapped in a closet, lying on top of a girl? How naïve am I to think he could actually be into me, when girls like Camilla are around, and evidently available?

In the den, hip-hop is pounding against the walls. Camilla has draped herself over Dominic and is grinding to the beat while he curls his arm around her waist. I look away just in time to see Freddie lurching towards me.

‘Hey Vanessha,’ he slurs, smiling ardently. His hands are moist and clumsy as he attempts to twirl me around, ballroom style. I think of Dominic, of his cool, deft fingers in the closet …

There’s a crash. Camilla has staggered into Dominic’s arms and I watch as they fall on the sofa together, panting with laughter.

Freddie grins sloppily. ‘Those two. Always flirting. They fancy each other’s pants off. Can you believe they’ve only snogged once?’

Suddenly, the room reels as I break away from him.

‘Vanesh— Nesh, where you going?’ he stammers.

‘Home.’

‘Wait! Did I do shum— shumming wrong?’

‘Of course not. You’re great, Freddie. Really. I’m just tired.’

‘But … ’ Freddie blinks, sobering up a fraction. ‘Will you be okay ged— gedding home?’

There’s genuine concern in his voice but I don’t even answer. I’m too upset, too infuriated with myself for giving a crap about Dominic Dumont. I grab my coat, run downstairs, and heave a sigh of relief when the blast of night air cools my burning face.
